Police Case was launched on Monday 23 July 2012 at the British Council by the Inspector General of Police, I.G. Francis Munu. A distinguished line up of speakers made statements, such as Ransford Kabia (Director of Programmes, SLBC) and Tillmann Schneider (Project Manager of GIZ). GIZ kindly supported the launch and outreach. Following screening of episode 1, there was a lively panel discussion chaired by Ibrahim Tommy of the Centre for Accountability and Rule of Law with representatives from police, judiciary, the media and AdvocAid.
AdvocAid, a civil society organisation, are using popular culture to not only entertain but also educate. AdvocAid promotes access to justice and strengthened rights for girls, women and their children in conflict with the law in Sierra Leone.
Police Case is a new legal TV series starting this week on SLBC. It follows the story of Adama, a woman who is subject to regular domestic violence from her husband. Adama is abused consistently until one day she reacts after a particular violent fight.
The series follows Adama’s story through the criminal justice system, educating viewers about key legal issues, such as rights when you are arrested, bail, rights at court, domestic violence and the role of paralegals. Through this series, based on real stories AdvocAid has encountered through its work, the public will have an insight into the plight of women in conflict with the law as well as being empowered to know more about their rights. Adama’s story could easily be your story or the story of one of your friends.
Police Case is a proudly all Sierra Leone production. Written and directed by Jonathan Bundu (who also directed The Team), cinematography and editing by Idriss Kpange (an established film maker and journalist) and produced by Concept Multimedia, a rising multimedia production company which also recorded the original soundtrack and songs at their new music recording studio. Legal input into the script was provided by Simitie Lavaly Esq, AdvocAid’s Legal Officer.
